What Are Apportioned Plates?

An apportioned registration or plate, which is commonly referred to as the International Registration Plan (IRP) is a registration cooperation agreement between the 48 contiguous United States and Canada.

What Vehicles are Eligible for IRP?

For vehicles to be eligible for apportioned plates through the International Registration Plan they must meet the following:

  • Must be intended for interstate use and used in two or more jurisdictions
  • Is a power unit having at least two axles and a gross vehicle weight in excess of 10,000 pounds
  • Is used in combination, when the weight exceeds 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weigh
